A PTA or a, Public Tag Agent, is a business that does vehicle title work in the state of Louisiana. PTA's can also register vehicles and renew registrations for anything that has a VIN # and can be registered for the roads & highways in Louisiana. Certain PTA's can also issue drivers licenses and learners permits as well as a Louisiana State ID Card.

Every situation is different but a good rule of thumb is that the taxes you pay will be .11% of the total amount you paid for the vehicle, plus whatever the PTA charges for their convenience fee (usually between $32-$35). So if you paid $5000 for the vehicle, your tax, title and license fee will be somewhere near $640. Again, different circumstances cause different totals in the end, things such as, late transferring the title (holding onto it for awhile without transferring it to your name), previous penalties, and excessive vehicle weights are examples of factors that may cause the price to rise.

Yes. We have a notary onsite in an effort to make your title transfer go as smooth as possible. In the case of a title transfer, just make sure both buyer and seller are present to sign the paperwork in front of the notary at the time of transfer. If you have some other type of paperwork that needs to be notarized, not pertaining to title work or vehicles in any way, we leave that up to the discretion of our notary, however, usually it isn't a problem to get that done.

Yes. All you need to be able to purchase a plate is, your current drivers license and unless the vehicle is a trailer you need to bring proof of liability insurance coverage for the vehicle you want a plate for. For trailers proof of insurance isn't necessary. You can still transfer your title without having liability insurance if you do not want a plate. Some people use that option when they don't plan on driving the vehicle for a period of time, or when they want to quickly sell a vehicle they've purchased from someone else. They then receive the title in 7-10 days and now that it is in their name, they can legally sell it, and insurance wasn't necessary to facilitate the process.

No. We can't process licenses or state id's until we get past a set period of time that every PTA begins with and then subsequently reaches. Once we've been in operations the required length of time, usually 6 months, the state audits the previous title work we've done, and decides if we are eligible/capable to implement the system allowing us to process drivers licenses. This is normal of every PTA in Louisiana and it is a state requirement.
